Meet the Composer

Xavier Chapman (b.2002) is a Hispanic-Asian and White instrumental and media composer studying at Bradley University.

During their undergraduate education, they premiered multiple pieces for small ensembles like “Wintry Morning” for flute and piano and “Down the Rabbit Hole” for woodwind quintet. Xavier has also worked on soundtracks for various games for the Bradley game design programs, this includes games such as “Disaster Golf” and “Chronoclasm”.

They take inspiration from various video game soundtracks and film scores to fuel their creative process and writing. They wanted to compose since their sophomore year of high school and have been able to learn and excel in the composition program. They had the opportunity to be a part of the collaboration between the composition studio and the game design major senior capstone project to provide music to the game that they have made since Xavier’s sophomore year. This opportunity lead to Xavier having their music for “Disaster Golf” being played by the Heartland Festival Orchestra. Xavier has presented about life as a student composer at the Illinois Music Educator Conference.

Xavier looks for different projects to work on because they love to learn the aspects of different genres and styles to help give them more knowledge. They are constantly wanting to improve their own compositional skills and understanding of music that are new to them. Every chance they can get to listen to new music and find the elements that make that piece cool or exciting they will take it. They are working towards composing in different media music areas from working with indie video game companies to helping score films and continue their writing for more classical areas as well.
